Ear Candy ~ Yoshi

Yoshi (Kiyoshi Shelton) was born in Saginaw, Michigan and is now based in Ann Arbor. He began as a poet at 14 and at 17, he gained fans while competing in local poetry slams. In 2009, Yoshi released his album, The Talent Show which included production by Yoshi’s older brother, Akira. It received rave reviews and accolades including Favorite Hip Hop Album of the Year on whutupdoe.com. This is when I first came to know about Yoshi. I heard about him through a mutual friend but really got to know him when he worked on a video with Darien Brockington for their song together, Magnetic. D-Brock also did a behind the scenes video while filming as well.

Behind The Scenes With Darien Brockington

The Talent Show shows range in Yoshi’s artistry from quirky interludes and touches of R&B, house and old school hip hop. I really enjoyed the album when it came out and recently started listening to it again in preparation of this piece. You know when you forget how much you liked something until you come across it again? Somewhat like a musically discovery? That’s how I felt. My faves on The Talent Show are "Get Down" a great starting track, the soulful house vibe of "Dance Tonight", "No Stress" which is an encouraging song and the infectious vibe of "Magnetic" and "Meet The Deadline". You don’t have to take my word for it though…not long ago, Yoshi made The Talent Show available as a free download! You can get it by clicking the album art below!

Recently, Yoshi hit me up with his latest track, Pillow Talk which features Element from Milwaukee and Darien Brockington. I was excited to hear this because I remember when Yoshi sent me the rough draft last summer to forward to D-Brock. I love the production of Pillow Talk done by Akira; it was the first thing I noticed. The vibe is definitely sexy. Yoshi and Darien work well together and I also loved Element’s verse.
